My Trip to Palm Desert

Over Memorial weekend, I went to Palm Desert.  It is two and a half hours away,  so it's an easy car trip.  In the desert, we share a condo with our cousins and when we stay there, I sleep on a bunk bed and I get to sleep on the top! My friends Royce and Brenden were there too. Sadly, we didn't see each other. We even brought our two dogs, Oliver and Chadney!

It's interesting that what was once just desert is now a city full of roads, restaurants, houses, shopping centers, hotels and even casinos.  Also, I noticed there was some green cacti in certain parts. One of the days the temperature was over a 100 degrees! That day, we went swimming. Another day, we went to our grandma's house and rode on her new golf cart.  The last day we played football in a huge grassy area that we share with all the neighbors.  My trip was very fun! When we went home we had to drive through a part of the desert that has thousands of windmills!  Windmills spin around in circles to produce power to cities. These windmills (called wind turbines) produce enough electricity each year to meet the needs of about 100,000 homes or 250,000 people.

  • Did you go anywhere over Memorial weekend?

  • Have you ever been to Palm Desert?

  • Have you ever seen a windmill in person?

  1. Dear Sammy,

What a terrific new post about your trip to Palm Desert! I love all the photographs you included in your story to help show your readers what this desert community looks like. In addition, I like how you hyperlinked to Royce's blog when you mentioned him. Nice blogging netiquette!

Mr. Yollis' parents live in one of the desert communities, so I was very familiar with some of the photos you took.

Have you ever visited the Living Desert park when you're there? If not, I recommend it!

Do you have any desert cactus at your house?

  2. Hello Sammy,

It seems you had a wonderful time over the Memorial weekend. Desert adventures can be fun when you are well prepared or have a good place to stay.

    Your questions…

Did I go anywhere over Memorial weekend?
Australia doesn’t have Memorial Day. Our day falls on April 25 each year. It’s known as ANZAC Day and remembers the first time Australia sent troops to war since becoming a country in 1901. It has become our Memorial Day.

Have you ever been to Palm Desert?
I haven’t been to Palm Desert.
You may know much of Australia is desert. Travelling along the main road running north from Adelaide to Darwin, you can go 100s of miles without seeing much other than some cars and trucks coming the other way. Our largest eagles, the wedge-tailed eagle, are often seen along the roadside. They are attracted to animals killed overnight.
Being out at night under a clear desert sky, you can see our own galaxy, The Milky Way, show many more stars than we can see in cities. The air can be so clear, I’ve seen satellites tracking across the sky and meteors streak as they burn out.

Have you ever seen a windmill in person?
I have seen wind turbines generating electricity. I know of one farm not too far from here that has set up their personal wind turbine. Most houses around here opt for solar panels if they want cleaner energy.

Thank you for sharing you wonderful experiences. Palm Desert looks like a spectacular place to visit.
