Testing For My Orange Belt

A couple of days ago I tested for my orange belt in Karate!  My Sensei (Scott) is really nice and let me do a blog post about it.  I have been practicing Shotokan Karate for about a year now and I really enjoy my time at Karate Families.  Here is a link to the web site,  Karate Families www.karatefamilies.com.

In order to get my orange belt, I had to:  memorize two Kata's;  kick a punching bag forwards, backwards , and sideways;  and perform many kinds of blocks and punches.   It was all worth it because I got my orange belt! I have also learned how to count to 20 in Japanese.  Karate is a great sport because it's fun and active and you learn how to defend yourself!

Here are some facts about Karate:

  • Karate comes from Japan
  • A room where you do Karate is called a Dojo
  • Gi is the name of the uniform people wear in Karate
 You should really try Karate!

  • Do you know any Japanese moves?

  •  What kind of Karate do you do?

  • Do you know any Japanese words like Dojo?

  1. Hello Sammy,

Congratulations on gaining your orange belt. That's quite an achievement and now you're set on the path to your green belt. Is that the 6th Kyu?

Do you know any Japanese moves?
The only moves I know are by seeing them at the cinema of on television. I can't do any of the moves.

What kind of Karate do you do?
While at university, I did take some karate classes but wasn't able to continue due to my studies and the times the classes were held.

Do you know any Japanese words like Dojo?
One school where I was a teacher had an exchange program with a city in Japan. We would have a Japanese teacher come to our school for about two months. She would teach the children some Japanese phrases and I would listen in. Here is one phrase I remember...

    Kon'nichiwa. Watashinonamaeha Ross Mannell desu.

According to my translation software, it is written as...

    こんにちは。私の名前は Ross Mannell です。

Did you know there are sites on the internet helping you with Japanese phrases? Here are links to two sites showing English, a way to say words in English, and the way to write them in Japanese...

    http://www.linguanaut.com/english_japanese.htm

    http://www.gojapango.com/japanese_language/japanese_phrase_book.php

I hope you have fun working towards your green belt.

  2. Dear Mr. Mannell,

Thank you for leaving a terrific comment! WOW, no wonder you have five blogs! Actually, at the Dojo I go to, the order of the belts is: White belt, Yellow belt, Orange belt, Blue belt, Purple belt, Green belt, Green belt with a brown stripe, Green belt with a black stripe, Brown belt, Brown belt with a dark brown stripe, Brown belt with a black stripe, then black belt. The karate I do is called Shotokan Karate.

It is very cool how you can translate letters and words on those websites you sent me.

What belt did you stop at?

    Your blogging friend,
    Sammy

  3. Dear Sammy,

Congratulations on earning your orange belt! Sadly, I do not take karate, but I would like to soon.

Your video was very cool. You had good form and posture in your moves. I bet if a kid tried to hurt you, you could take him down with a couple of your moves!

What kind of drills does your Sensei have you do at home?

How long does it take to earn your black belt?

    Your friend,

I agree with you if someone tried to hurt Sammy he put him down with one of his moves. I used to do Karate and I got my black belt! I did drills and practiced ever day.

      Sincerely,
      Brenden

    2. @ Rexon,

Thank you for leaving a comment! When I test it takes around thirty minutes, and when you test for a black belt it takes three hours at the karate studio I go to! That's a long time! At home I practice Katas.

I hope you can take Karate with me.

      Sincerely,
      Sammy

Thank you for commenting! I like how you are commenting back to my readers also. You are a black belt? Where do you take Karate and how long did it take you to become a black belt? How often would you go to classes?

  4. Dear Sammy,

Wow I can not believe it takes 3 hours to test for a black belt! When I start Karate I will go to the studio you go to.

What is the first belt in Karate?

When will you earn your black belt?

    What is a Katas?

I, too hope we can take Karate together.

    1. @ Rexon,

The first belt is the White belt, but the order of the belts is different at other studios. I'm not sure when I am going to earn my black belt but it is going to be awhile. I've been taking karate for a year now and I'm the third belt in karate. A Kata is a series of 8-10 movements that that you have to memorize. One of my Kata's is on that video. I know two and a half Kata's.

      Sincerely,
      Sammy

  5. Dear Sammy,

I know some moves from Tae Kwon Do. Tae Kwon Do is a different type of martial arts. In Tae Kwon Do you earn belts that are white, white with yellow stripes, yellow, yellow with green stripes, green, green with blue stripes, blue, blue with red stripes, red, red with black stripes, and black with gold stripes. The moves I know from Tae Kwon Do are high block, low block, and middle block. If you want do a punch in Tae Kwon Do you have do horse back ride stand and then punch.

I learned that in Karate, you earn belts that are white, yellow, orange, green, blue, brown, black, and red. I also learned that Karate is a Japanese combination of combat and self-defense techniques, and in Tae Kwon Do is a Korean combination of self-defense and unarmed combat.

What do you think of Tae Kwon Do?

    Sincerely,
    Trey

  7. Dear Sammy,

Great post! It sounds like a lot of fun to do karate. That was a pretty good video. Since I don't do karate, it is doubtful that I would be able to beat you. I also can't belive it takes 3 hours. Sensai Scott does seem extremely nice. Did you ever notice that Sensai Scott is an allitaration?

Do you memorize your moves and numbers?

Do you know how to say something in Japanise?

What is your favorite part about karate?

    Is karate challenging?

What is the hardest part about it?

What are the numbers that yo use to count to twenty in Japanese?

Does karate also teach unarmed combat or just self defense?

    Sincerely,
    Aidan

  10. @ Hannah,

Thank you for leaving a comment! Mrs. Morris and Miss Jordan are FANTASTIC teachers and so is Mrs. Yollis! I've been taking karate for about a year now. I know a couple of students in your class earned their own blog. Tell them I say congratulations and keep up the blogging.

You also are a great blogger and I have checked out your posts and I like them! I will try to leave you a comment on your blog soon.

    Sincerely

  11. Dear Sammy,
Congratulations on achieving an orange belt in Karate! I think learning a martial art is so cool, maybe you can talk Skyler or Isabella into trying a class at your Karate studio. I think it's really important to learn how to protect yourself if necessary. I loved the video, you've got some nice moves!

Do you know any Japanese moves?
I really enjoy picking up chopsticks and eating sushi! Is that a Japanese move?

What kind of Karate do you do?
About 20 years ago I took a few Karate classes, but I ended up kicking something in class and broke my toe! Ouch! I'm so embarrassed that I just admitted that to you. Haha! Needless to say, that was the end of my adventure in Karate. Maybe one day I'll give it another try.

Do you know any Japanese words like Dojo?
When I eat sushi and it's really good, I say "oishii", (according to my friend Lysa, who travels to Japan frequently, it's pronounced 'o' 'she" ) which translates to tasty or delicious!

It was great reading your blog. Sorry it's been a while since i've written to you. I'll check back soon.

    Love ya,
    Auntie Sheri
